Meals Associated With Events In Nigeria

By Urban petite - August 22, 2019

In Nigeria, there's a saying that Saturdays are for weddings /occasions. And when you hear events, you should know that there are different types of food.
if you attend any event in Nigeria and you don't find any of the food about to be listed, it's either you're not in Nigeria or that is not a Nigeria gathering.

1. Rice: Jollof rice, fried rice (sometimes white rice), are one of the compulsory food you'll find in a Nigerian event, be it wedding, birthday, anniversary, graduation, house warming etc. If you attend any of
these events in Nigeria and you're not served rice, please take your leave. Nigerians are so fond of Jollof rice that they named it party Jollof /party rice.

2. Swallow: You'll find this especially when you attend a Nigerian wedding. It's either semo, amala, Eba,
fufu, pounded yam, lafu etc. Don't be surprised if you find all. In a Nigerian wedding, serving rice alone without any kind of swallow is like getting a half mark in a test or an exam, especially when elders are present in the event. Not everybody can make these as it requires lots of strength to turn, so as to  avoid lumps. Swallow is almost as important as rice in a
Nigerian ocassion. It is served with different kind of soup like afang, egusi, Bitterleaf soup, ofe owerri, and so on. Now if you're a Nigerian, seeing these soups alone will make your  mouth water,  especially when they are full of obstacles (meat, fish, ponmo) etc. So when next you attend a wedding in Nigeria, make sure you have a taste of their swallow. If you can't
find any, my dear, pick up your bag and leave.

3. Pepper soup: As the name goes, it is very pepperish. It is made with hot seasoned flavour and freshly grounded pepper. You're sure to find this in
a traditional ocassion. I believe every tribe in Nigeria acknowledges the pepper soup. You'll be enticed with the number of fish you'll find in the plate. Having a taste of it will leave leave your mouth alive and begging for more. Sometimes it is eaten with cocoa yam, which is also a native food. It is quite easy to cook and the stress is minimal.

4. Salad: A mixture of raw vegetables such as lettuce, cucumber, tomato, cabbage often mixed with mayonnaise and served with rice (Jollof or fried) as part of the meal. To make a complete party rice,
there must be salad by the side to complement it. It is ideal to include salad on the menu of an event, especially during the hot season of the year. Salads are made up mainly of vegetables, suitable fruits especially apples, grape fruits and other ingredients such as eggs. A good salad depends to a great extent on its appearance, which is always as decorative as possible. It should tempt the appetite.

5. Assorted: A meal of different sorts of meat gotten from different parts of a cow (the kidney, liver, intestine, skin) also known as shaki, edo, brokotor. It is normal to kill a cow or cows in Nigeria events especially weddings, burials, and naming ceremonies. The meat is served with salad or associated vegetables, then a toothpick is present in
the plate.
